Best Upcoming Indie Strategy & Simulation Games 2018

These are my most anticipated indie games for strategy and simulation coming out in 2018. Some of them are already in Early Access, so be sure to check them out. There is no order to the list, because each game has its unique charm. Maybe it’ll help you find a good indie game, you haven’t heard of yet. Let’s start!

Rise of Industry

1. Rise of Industry

Take the reins of a small company and build an industrial and financial empire in this 90s inspired strategy/tycoon game!

Designed with an eye towards both accessibility and depth, Rise of Industry takes inspiration from classic games like Industry Giant, Transport Tycoon, Anno, and Factorio. There’s enough strategic complexity and replayability to satisfy the most experienced lovers of the genre, while its user friendly mechanics ensure that new players will love it as well.

Good thing for those, who can’t wait and don’t mind an unfinished game, you can play the alpha of the game via itch.io.

Before

2. Before

Before is a pre-historic simulation-strategy game about survival. Guide your tribe through the challenges of a harsh and unforgiving pre-historic world, shaping their culture and defining their history.

The game uses low-poly graphics and looks absolutely beautiful. It is created by master mind Bill Lowe and produced by Facepunch Studios, who developed games like Rust or Garry’s Mod in the past.

You can visit their website to have an insight on the development process and to sign up for beta testing here.

The Wild Eight

3. The Wild Eight

The plane crash was only the beginning. Eight survivors are stranded in the middle of an unforgiving Alaska. Don’t let it consume you. Survive and live to tell the tale of The Wild Eight.

In The Wild Eight always keeping on the move is your only way to survive and find out what happened with this mysterious place. It doesn’t pretend to be a realistic survival sim, but very challenging and fun game designed for both, a teamwork multiplayer and an immersive singleplayer experience.

You can play the early access version of the game on Steam or visit their website for more information. Even though they want to make the game available for Mac and Linux as well, it’s yet only to play on windows.

Dead Matter

4. Dead Matter

Yet another zombie survival game. But this kickstarter supported game stands out because of its stunning graphics and realism. Dead Matter is a rogue-lite that aims to quench the community’s thirst for a title that properly balances survival mechanics with fulfilling gameplay. You can visit its Kickstarter Campagne here.

Astroneer

5. Astroneer

Astroneer is set during a 25th century gold rush where players must explore the frontiers of outer space, risking their lives and resources in harsh environments for the chance of striking it rich.

On this adventure, a player’s most useful tool is their ability to shape their world, altering the terrain and extracting valuable resources from planets and moons. Resources can be traded or crafted into new tools, vehicles, and modules to create everything from massive industrial bases to mobile rover bases.

This game of aerospace industry and interplanetary exploration comes with beautiful low-poly graphics. You can visit their website for more insights here.

Developer: System Era Softworks

Frostpunk

6. Frostpunk

In an ultimately frozen world, people develop steam-powered technology to oppose the overwhelming cold. The city ruler has to manage both the inhabitants and the infrastracture the citizens live in. Leader’s tactical skills face challenges, frequently questioning morality and the basic foundation of what we consider an organized society.

Here optimization and resource management often clash with empathy and thoughtful decision-making. While city and society management consume most of the ruler’s time, at some point exploration of outside world is necessary to understand its history and present state.

Frostpunk is created by the same developers responsible for the amazing game This War Of Mine. So be sure to keep an eye on this game as well. You can find more information on their website here.

Platform: Windows and Mac

Release: Early 2018

Developer: 11 Bit Studios

Neolithic

7. Neolithic

Neolithic: First City-States is a Deep Historical Strategy Game heavily influenced by games such as Age of Empires I, Civilization & Caesar III, and to a lesser extent games like Haven and Hearth, UnReal World and games like RimWorld. The game includes aspects of city building, military strategy and deep character development.

The game is about making this micro and macro scale gameplay meet in a meaningful way. Set in the Neolithic or Chalcolithic to Late Bronze Age, the game features characters that have needs, gain skills, carry, equip and craft items, build structures and each have unique strengths and weaknesses.

Like Minecraft, Banished and Stardew Valley, this is essentially a 1 person project. You can find more information on his Kickstarter page here or on the official website of the game.

Platform: Windows, Mac and Linux

Release: 2018

Developer: Alexander Tamura-Harvey

Ancient Cities

8. Ancient Cities

Ancient Cities is a survival and strategy city builder based on ancient times. Starting in the Neolithic era you will guide your people through generations, discovering and improving technologies, managing resources and population, facing your human or natural enemies, and ultimately, building the most fantastic city of antiquity in a fully simulated world and ecosystem.

This indie game stands out for its stunning beautiful and realistic graphics. You can visit their website for more pictures and information of the game here. They also post a lot of interesting stuff to the game on Twitter.
